PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This position is in support of the DNA Extraction and Staging Laboratory (DESL) as part of the Cancer Genomics Research (CGR) Laboratory. The CGR is a high-throughput genomics research laboratory supporting the NCI''s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG). DESL is functional area within the group responsible for all sample preparation for use at CGR and collaborative institutions around the world.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The incumbent will be responsible for the planning and execution of biospecimen aliquotting job requests. Biospecimens handled include serum, plasma, urine, and fecal matter (serum is by far the most requested material type). The selected individual will need to exercise independent judgment in performing assigned tasks while interacting with the laboratory manager on project priority, progress and issues. Work scope includes development of task plan, validation and testing of any new automation methods, preparation of automation files, labeling tubes, execution of the aliquotting task, batching, and shipment of test samples. Additionally, residual vials will need to be returned to inventory at the biorepository following task completion. All database tracking will be the responsibility of the RA II. Depending on the number of aliquotting requests, additional time will be dedicated to DESL''s remaining laboratory areas of nucleic acid extraction and QC. Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous chemical or biological materials. Requires the use of personal protective equipment and adhere to strict safety protocols. This level employee typically works on multiple, concurrent projects deemed moderately complex based on the following variables: specimen fragility, file manipulation and preparation, database interaction, complexity of aliquotting tasks, turn around time, and project size.

Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree.
Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years related biomedical experience.
Experience in molecular biology, general laboratory skills, exercising independent judgment, working knowledge of genomics/biomarkers, SOPs (writing and review) gathering requirements and completing scope of work documentation, liquid handling automation.
The successful candidate is detail oriented, has the ability to mulit-task multiple concurrent complex projects.
This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with use of LIMS or other complex databases (e.g. BSI); experience with a wide range of biospecimens.
