This position is responsible for operating a transit-type bus or other Transit vehicle to transport the general public, including people with disabilities.
Supervision is received from the Operations Supervisor and/or the Operations Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Transport customers within approximately a 100-mile radius on deviated and fixed route assignments on various vehicle and service types Assist passengers in boarding and departing the vehicle when necessary Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections Clean and fuel the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions, including maintaining a clean working environment Record and report needed repairs to supervisors Record and report mileage and ridership Maintain a daily activity trip summary and other related reports Collect survey data as needed Participate in job-related training and seminars Serve on staff committees Provide occasional office assistance Collect fares and tickets from passengers as appropriate Perform other related duties as required To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges Ability to satisfy all Department of Transportation requirements as they apply to periodic physical examinations and licensing standards Ability and willingness to learn First Aid, CPR and other job-related skills, and to maintain current certifications Knowledge of Maryland state and local traffic laws and regulations Knowledge of roads and communities in the Frederick County area, and able to effectively read maps and follow directions Accurate math and clerical skills, with the ability to properly complete mileage and vehicle use reports and other departmental record-keeping Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to effectively use telephone and utilize two-way radio communications in compliance with FCC regulations, ability to accurately follow written and spoken instructions and ability to effectively convey information to passengers Ability and willingness to learn to operate all fleet vehicles Ability and willingness to work in varied driving conditions, as long as the weather has not caused service to be suspended Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
Driving experience transporting passengers PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical requirements include the ability to assist persons as they board and depart the vehicle, to secure wheelchairs on board, and to perform general vehicle maintenance While working in this position, the employee is constantly sitting, pushing and pulling up to and over 300 pounds, reaching and driving; frequently walking, moving, climbing, descending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and making repetitive motions; occasionally lifting up to 20 lbs and rarely lifting between 20-50 pounds.
While working in this position, the employee is constantly working outdoors, in temperatures above 100 degrees, in temperatures below 32 degrees; frequently walking on uneven ground and exposed to noise; occasionally working indoors, potentially exposed to infectious diseases and required to wear protective equipment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / EXAMINATION PROCESS Available for varied working hours as needed This position is subject to post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and random drug and alcohol testing This position is considered essential, therefore, the employee is expected, when directed, to report to work in the event of a weather emergency (or other circumstances) when County offices are closed.
